Educational Programmes
Through its educational programmes, the Centre for Public Health aims to provide individuals with an opportunity to meet with like minded people, have a great times studying, whilst increasing their public health knowledge and skills.
Masters Courses
'Sokrates' MSc / Postgraduate Diploma / Postgraduate Certificate in Public Health (Applied), (International Health Development) or (Analysis):
Full time MSc (1 year), Part time MSc (2 years), postgraduate diploma (16 months) or postgraduate certificate (12 months) Starting in January each year, the programmes are open to any appropriately qualified individual who wants to increase their public health knowledge and skills to enhance their career prospects.
The applied route is primarily for professionals who may not necessarily be working in a health setting, but who nevertheless have considerable responsibility for the activities that determine health.
The international health development route is for students from overseas who have some responsibility for public health programmes in their home country; or for individuals living in this country who would like to develop public health knowledge and skills with a more international flavour because they may be considering working in a developing country in the future.
The analysis route is similar to the applied route, but has a much stronger emphasis on the practical application of knowledge and skills needed by individuals interested in pursuing a career in public health information and intelligence.
In all our Masters programmes, the emphasis is more on learning than teaching. The programmes build on the basic premise that adults bring a wealth of knowledge and skills to the learning environment and that the most productive learning takes place through the sharing of knowledge and experiences.
All routes aim to attract a broad range of individuals and professionals from a variety of settings and organisations.
A public health field trip to the Gambia is offered to students on all routes each year. For those who have never lived in a developing country, this can be a life changing experience. For students coming from overseas, this provides an opportunity to come into contact with public health in a different setting.

As the Capital of Culture for 2008, Liverpool will be an exciting place to study, socialise and meet new friends, so why not come and join us?
People who work in public health try to understand and influence the factors that determine health and they take a lead in applying scientific knowledge to the organised activities used to promote and protect the public's health. These degree programmes reflect a growing need for people with the knowledge and skills to work with and for communities who know how to promote and protect the public's health and the environment.
These courses prepare students for a wide range of jobs, and personal development and career planning is an important part of the curriculum. As they go through the course, students will develop the transferable skills highly valued by a wide range of potential employers.
The environment route is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and is particularly suited to students wishing to pursue a career as an environmental health practitioner. Mature students and students who already have careers are also most welcome on either route.
The City of Liverpool has recorded a number of firsts in Public Health (the first District Nurse, the first Medical Officer of Health, the first Environmental Health Officer, and the first WHO Healthy City in the United Kingdom). These programmes build on this rich history and the collaborative networks, which have developed within the City.
A public health field trip to the Gambia is offered to final year students on both routes. For those who have never seen life in a developing country, this can be a life changing experience.
