North West Mental Wellbeing Survey 2009

The summary report highlights key findings from the North West Mental Wellbeing Survey. The survey of 18,500 adults - the largest survey ever of its kind in the UK - was undertaken in 2009 in a response to a growing need to understand more about the positive mental wellbeing of people in the region. Tackling Health Related Worklessness

Suicide in the North West: A review of non-residential and outdoor locations

To help support an effective regional response to suicide, the North West Public Health Observatory (NWPHO) were commissioned by the North West Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP NW) to complete an analysis of non-residential suicide locations in the North West. NWPHO worked with a multi-partner network including CSIP NW, Greater Manchester Suicide Prevention Group, Government Office North West, Samaritans, the Highways Agency and the Fire and Rescue Service, among others, to achieve this. The full results of the analysis are contained in a confidential report, in which locations of suicides are identified. However, the additional report available here discusses findings of the study (without identifying specific locations) and provides insight into non-residential and outdoor suicide sites and potential interventions in the North West and beyond.

North West Children and Young People's Health Indicators 2009 Summary Report

This summary report marks the last update of the North West Children and Young People's Health Indicators online tool. It builds upon the summary found in the North West Children and Young People's Health Indicators report (published in April 2008) and summarises 50 measures relating to the health and wellbeing of children and young people. A total of 37 out of the 50 indicators have been updated since the report and online tool were first published. AACCE (non-opiate) substance use in the North West of England

This report details the demographic profile, referral sources in, and the exit status upon leaving, of those individuals in contact with structured treatment stating non-opiate substance use, incorporating Alcohol Amphetamines, Cannabis, Cocaine and Ecstasy (AACCE). Analysis was conducted to compare this AACCE group to those in treatment who have entered due to opiate use to determine whether AACCE clients are a distinct group when compared to opiate users, who constitute the majority of those in structured drug treatment. This themed report attempts to evidence the scale and pace of change in presentations to Tier 3 and 4 services in the North West.

Health and Lifestyles in the North West

The North West regional lifestyle survey – the largest ever survey in the region – took place between June and December 2007. The region’s residents were asked about their general health, height and weight, diet and nutrition, physical activity, alcohol consumption, smoking habits and caring responsibilities. Each section in this report details the policy and background to the topic area, existing available comparators at England and North West levels, and the findings of the regional survey broken down by sex, age, deprivation and ethnic grouping. Survey results will enable practitioners in the North West to target those populations with the greatest level of need and allow the region to measure progress in addressing health inequalities.

Healthy Weight in the North West Population

The North West Public Health Observatory provided up-to-date, evidence-based research support to the Liverpool City Region Health is Wealth Commission, which was established to examine the growing gap between the City Region’s booming economic performance and its worsening public health status and to look at why this might be happening, and to make recommendations as to what might be done to help improve the situation. One of the Commission's key themes was incapacity benefit, and so NWPHO produced this summary report profiling incapacity benefit in the area to assist the Commission in such recommendations. North West Public Health Information Portal Annual Review 2007

The NorthWest Public Health Information Portal (NWPH.net) was designed to allowmore effective cross working between the many agencies that function within multi-disciplinary Public Health teams across the North West. Increasingly, individuals are not members of a single organisation or network but are linked with and work with many. Therefore, information needs to be available to many but not duplicated numerous times on various websites. The systems used to store and find information need to be flexible, responsive and dynamic as Public Health organisations and networks evolve. A Steering Group provides strategic direction to the portal and a Content Managers’ Group ensures that resources are relevant and up to date and makes recommendations for further development.

Interpersonal Violence and Alcohol in the Russian Federation: Policy Briefing

Violent crime and alcohol consumption have increased considerably in the Russian Federation since the late 1980s with harmful health and social consequences for individuals, their families and friends and communities. Heavy alcohol consumption is closely associated with violent behaviour within the Russian Federation and internationally. The relationship between alcohol consumption and violent behaviour is complex, involving physiological, psychological, situational, social and cultural factors. Measures to control alcohol production and reduce consumption have reduced violent behaviour in the Russian Federation and elsewhere. However, round-the-clock sales, easy access to alcohol for minors and fierce economic competition between alcohol companies resulting in aggressive marketing techniques still need to be addressed in the Russian Federation. The multifaceted nature of alcohol-related violence highlights the need for a public health partnership involving health, social, education and criminal justice agencies. Sexually Transmitted Infections Data Selector

The routine surveillance of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England & Wales is carried out through the collection of statutory KC60 returns from genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinics. KC60 forms contain aggregated data on infection, gender, and age group; with some sexual orientation information being available for selected conditions. The Sexually Transmitted Infections Data Selector is an interactive online system that contains annual KC60 data for North West England from 1995 to 2003, and allows the data to be queried by infection, gender, and age group, at a regional, strategic health authority, county or clinic level. Data can be displayed either as a web-based table (html format), as a graphical output, or downloaded into excel to allow additional data manipulation.

North West Public Health Portal

The North West Public health information Portal has been designed to allow more effective cross working between the many agencies that function within multi-disciplinary Public Health teams across the North West. The system allows each regional agency partner to manage and maintain their own network site within the system, then shared content is filtered upwards to an over arching parent site. The goal of the system is to avoid duplication in a more dynamic public health structure, where people are increasing not members of one organisation but members of many multi disciplinary networks, and where resources are shared amongst many different networks. Current portal partners include Regional Public Health Networks, Health Protection Agency, The North West public Health Observatory, and North West Government Office teams.

Health GIS

HealthGIS is a web-based mapping tool that allows users to visualise regional heath data in easy to understand thematic maps. By utilising scaleable vector graphics technology, the system produces high quality, interactive output without the need for complex server software. The system can display data at any geographical level, the initial launch includes Primary Care Trust data, and Local Authority and Ward Level data systems. The tool uses the same software as the National Statistics Census 2001 website and is intended for use by anyone, including the public. However, it will be particularly useful for professionals working in public health, environmental health, Strategic Health Authorities, Primary Care Trusts, voluntary sectors, local government and related agencies, e.g. police.

Hospital Episode Statistics Service

North West Public Health Observatory has committed to developing an effective hospital episodes statistics service. As the regional ‘safe-haven’ for the North West we hold the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) dataset, which is a large database containing details of all patients admitted to NHS hospitals in the region over a 10-year period. Alongside bespoke data requests, and contributing to national analyses, we envisage disseminating a series of outputs consisting of a number of HES based indicators, locally determined through consultation with key service users such as, PCTs, LAs, SHAs.
