Alan McGee MA, BA (Hons), Dip SW, Dip HE, Dip Counselling, has worked in the drug and alcohol field for over twenty years and has been involved, both as a practitioner and as a manager, in the development and promotion of HIV prevention and harm reduction initiatives within the health and social care sector. Alan has a wide range of experience and a proven record of achievement in the development and provision of harm reduction and drug related services.
Alan contributed to the development of the MSc in Public Health (Addictions) and lectures on both undergraduate and MSc programmes at the Public Health Institute. Alan also provides expert input and review to drug related research and evaluation. Alan is currently a Senior Public Health Practitioner with Sefton Council.

Evaluation of a Residential Alcohol Detoxification Programme Facilitated by The Basement
The Basement, a Liverpool based homelessness support service delivered a residential detoxification programme in which up to eight individuals attend a two week programme in North Wales. The first week involved an alcohol reduction process which is not medically assisted whilst the second is a ‘dry week’. Group and one to one work take place across both weeks. The residential is preceded by six weeks of preparation sessions which all prospective residents must attend. This report details Centre for Public Health’s rapid appraisal of the service delivery, residents’ perceptions and steps taken to ensure safety.
