Shaima Hassan

PhD Student

Shaima Hassan is currently completing a PhD, under the supervision of Dr Conan Leavey, Jane Rooney from LJMU and Dr Katherine Birch from Liverpool Hope University. Shaima’s project entitled “Exploring Muslim Women’s Transition to Motherhood within the NHS”, focuses on Muslim women’s perceived needs during their maternity journey and involves an exploration into the factors influencing their health seeking decisions when engaging with maternity services in the UK; this is done by using a multi method approach, combining longitudinal interviews and focus groups. This will also include health professionals’ experiences when providing care for Muslim women.

Prior to her PhD, Shaima completed a BSc in Biochemistry and Forensic Science and an MSc in Public Health at Liverpool John Moores University, with her main interests being factors influencing people’s health behaviour, patient experience and health services.
