I am Reader in Substance Use. My work covers all aspects of substance use, but I have a particular interest in young people's health issues. Recent work has developed and delivered a primary and secondary research programme examining the evidence base for drug misuse prevention and the mechanisms for implementing evidence based practice. Based on this work, we recommend how policy and practice can be developed in order to best prevent drug misuse across the United Kingdom. I also have research interests in psychopharmacology, and addictive behaviours, with a focus upon causes, consequences, and experiences of drug use. Alongside collaborating colleagues in the UK, USA, and EU, I am interested in the psychopharmacology of entactogens and hallucinogens; in particular MDMA (ecstasy) and psilocybin.
I am interested in supervising PG students wishing to study most topics in illegal drug use; drug prevention; and I'm particularly interested in supervising research employing quantitative methods.
I'm a reviewer for the journals The Lancet; Psychopharmacology; Addiction; Journal of Psychopharmacology; Addictive Behaviors; Drug and Alcohol Review; Drug and Alcohol Dependence; International Journal of Drug Policy; Anxiety and Depression; Journal of Urban Health; BMC Public Health.
I'm an academic referee for the Home Office RDS; NIHR PHR Programme.
I'm a grant referee for the MRC, ESRC, British Academy, British Council, BIG Lottery Fund

This briefing presents information on the substance Mephedrone (also known as: 4‐MMC, ‘Meow’, ‘M‐Cat’) and other related drugs. This substance has received recent media attention concerning its legality and (largely unconfirmed) speculations around its contribution to the deaths of several young people. Little scientific evidence is available on mephedrone and most information is derived from users themselves or user orientated websites.

In response to Hidden Harm (ACMD, 2003), the government outlined its commitment to fund research identifying what types of services and interventions work with children of problem drug and alcohol users and their families (DfES, 2005). This evaluation of Families First’s intensive intervention was commissioned by the Department of Health and is in accordance with this objective. Families First is an intensive family intervention which provides advice, social work intervention and support for adults and families on substance use related issues. The study findings aim to add to the UK evidence base and inform the development of future interventions for children affected by parental substance use.
