My role within the Centre is as Lead Researcher for Violence focusing on the two key areas of violence prevention and the development of the Trauma and Injury Intelligence Group (TIIG). The Centre is a WHO collaborating centre for Violence Prevention and my role involves working at a local, regional, national and international level to promote a public health approach to violence prevention. I also conduct original research on violence, particularly youth violence in recreational settings and work with partner agencies to evaluate interventions (e.g. the use of polycarbonate glassware in bars) and support services (e.g. the Specialist Domestic Violence Court Programme). As the project lead for TIIG my role involves promoting the development and implemention of the TIIG Injury Surveilance System across the North West and supervising a team of TIIG project officers.
Prior to this role, I conducted research in substance misuse. Projects included a review of staffing structures and needs within Merseyside DTTO, an assessment of the illicit drugs market on the Wirral, an evaluation of the Nitelite Initiative in Southport and an investigation into substance misuse in The Gambia, Africa.
Before joining the Centre, I studied for my BSc Public Health (HONS) degree at Liverpool John Moores University. In 2008, I obtained an MSc in Social Research Methods and Statistics from the University of Manchester.

In recent years, the capacity of licensed premises in many town and city centres in the UK has increased substantially. Combined with growing levels of alcohol consumption among young people, this has meant popular nightlife areas have experienced increasing problems with alcohol-related violence. In response, the UK Government has invested in significant police resources and legislative change in order to stem a rising tide of alcohol-related violence largely associated with the night time economy, including through changes to licensing legislation and implementation of the Alcohol Misuse Enforcement Campaigns (AMEC). This paper uses A&E data to measure the effects of the AMECs and the initial impact of the Licensing Act on violent injuries as measured by assault attendance at an A&E department in the North West of England.
